SPE Award Winners (liveblog)

Saturday’s big thing (like the keynote last night) is the presentation of the 2009 SPE Award Winners (The freestyle crystal apple award, SPE Student Awards, The Jeannie Pearce Award, Garry B. Fritz Imagemaker Award, and SPE Award for Excellence in Historical, Critical, and Theoretical Writing in Honor of Jennifer Yamashiro.)

I’m typing this as I’m in the event, so it might be a bit scattered, but I’ll try to get everyone’s name and I’ll find their images later when I post it. I’ll probably have to fix spelling as well, since the slideshow behind the speakers seems to be totally off. Honestly, this is pretty damn annoying because the imagery and names up there are totally unrelated to what the speaker is saying and REALLY REALLY BIG.

As another note, I wish they’d be uniform in their presentation. I ‘m sure this will all be online so I can check it though. I was really hoping to see the work up when they announced it – some cool reveal.

About the presentation:

The first speaker, I didn’t catch his name quick enough, talked about how exciting it was to be in his booth at freestyle and see young people come up and get really excited about the newest film equipment. Everyone clapped and laughed.

The second speaker presented the Garry B. Fritz Award – a 1000 dollar honorarium to someone presenting for the first time at the SPE national conference

The third award was for academic peer reviewed essays, with a stipend of 1000 dollars and publication in Exposure.

Next were the SPE Student awards. The Jeannie Pearce Award was for excellence using digital techniques. Then she read off the student awards in quick succession. I’m sort of glad I couldn’t catch them all, because I just realized how horrible I am at spelling names – I’ll update this post after they release the information with all the proper spellings and schools.

Here’s the list:

Freestyle Crystal Apple Award:
Joseph Small, The University of Notre Dame
Martina Lopez, The University of Notre Dame

Garry B. Fritz Imagemaker Award:
Vaughn Wascovitch. ???? University.

SPE Award for Excellence in … Writing:
Christopher Burnett, The University of Toledo

The Jeannie Pearce Award:
Kevin Malella, Columbia

SPE Student Award Recipients:
God, 10 people said really fast. I’ll fill this in later, haha.

Congratulations to everyone! Keep pushing it forward.
