Unfortunately, editorial fashion doesn't make that much. Magazines, at least these days, even ask for big shoots to be done for free at times (since they say it's good for your publicity.) It's sort of bull, but it's so competitive that they get away with it.

I personally love fashion photography. And to me, it really seems like the most practical direction for a photographer wanting to make money while still functioning in a creatively free manner. The only other appealing option to me is documentary photographer, eg: James Nachtwey.

The other choices then are fine art photographer, advertising, food, and sports. Fine art photography as a career is tremendously impractical, and is usually a by-product of an already successful commercial career (usually fashion). Advertising can be interesting, but usually involves more computer and less camera. Food photography is boring, but certainly not more boring than sports photography. The choice is easy for me.

Plus, just look at the work of Irvin Penn, Richard Avedon, Herb Ritts... There is great art to be found in fashion photography.
